Over 3 years ago, I was appointed as Chief executive of an organisation that was reeling from the aftermath of a severely critical H.C.C. report. As a new CEO, with a new Chair, we started to rebuild the Board and the organisation with 5 new Non-Executives, a new Medical Director, Nurse Director and Chief Operating Officer. As a team we were exposed to a number of organisations providing support to the new Board from The Institute of Improvement, the Clinical Governance Unit, the SHA and various private organisations. The work undertaken by Oxford Executive (OE) was of a different order of magnitude. Firstly, their approach gets to know the culture of the organisation. I believe this is a powerful way to understand 'how the organisation (we) got here' and how best to manage change for positive service improvement. The second component of note is work with each individual. The approach is not a "one size fits all". By understanding how each individual can optimise their potential it makes for an outcome where 'the sum of the individual parts is greater for the organisation'. Then by considering how we work as a team, both inside and out with the organisation and focussing the collective talents on the objectives of the Trust, I believe it makes for a sustainable solution and improvements that are not 'one off' but embedded in a new culture - a new way of working. Previous attempts at Board development have been more 'Tick Box' whereas OE helps organisations to deliver and meet their strategic objectives Ongoing support and coaching then helps the team get through difficult times/relationships. I wholeheartedly recommend Oxford Executive.

Our organisation (SPH) has actively been working with Maire and team for the last 2 years. Surrey Community Health Chief Executive and Chair Development Programme

Oxford Executive were commissioned by Surrey Community Health to support the development of the relationship between the Independent Lay Chair and Chief Executive (CE). Both individuals were new in post and wanted to commence their appointments by ensuring that they developed a relationship which would be beneficial to the strategic leadership of the organisation. The programme involved MBTI assessments and coaching sessions both on an individual and 'two-way' basis. The individual sessions prepared the ground for a joint session which fostered a positive, effective working relationship capable of promoting strategic, visible, transformational leadership and promoting the organisation in a positive light, thus encouraging inter agency partnerships. The joint sessions also assisted both parties with becoming role models by ensuring that the organisation lives up to the vision and values agreed by the shadow board and gains a strong reputation for delivery against plans. Above all the sessions have provided greater understanding of the motivations and personalities of both parties thus promoting the accountability of the CE to the Chair and in building collaborative relationships between the executive directors and independent lay members that benefit the organisation. Maire Brankin approached this work from a standpoint of respect for both the CE and Chair as individuals and in doing so gained the trust of both parties.
